This string quartet had two ideas behind it. First, I wanted to write something inspired by classic heavy metal instrumentals, such as Iron Maiden's "Losfer Words." Thus, the driving basslines and "harmony guitar" inspired violins, as well as the guitar-solo inspired development section in the first movement. Secondly, I wanted to have fun with meter, inspired by progressive rock. The first two movements both use meter like classical sonata form uses key areas. They start with one meter, and metric changes represent a move away from stability. I also use diatonicism/chromaticism in a similar manner in the first movement.
