My second string quartet had two goals. The first was to write something inspired by classic heavy metal instrumentals, and this contains ideas originally written on guitar for rock songs. The second was to have fun with meter - the first and second movements use meter the way common practice uses key area: they are in sonata form, with the primary theme in one meter, the secondary theme in another, and the development using shifting and unstable meters.
